The Whirlpool Whirlpool

Appliance Magazine reports that Whirlpool is one of 19 companies bidding for Korean appliance company Daewoo Electronics Corp.  To summarize Whirlpool's current and potential incestuous tangles.

  • Daewoo supplies BSH "Thermador" brand side by side refrigerators, an account held by Whirlpool twice before.
  • Daewoo is the licensee of Maytag's "Magic Chef" brand for use in small appliances.
  • Haier is the licensee of Maytag's "Amana" brand for use in air conditioners and refrigerators smaller than 14 cu ft.
  • Haier is supplier of many of Maytag's "Amana" branded freezers.
  • Whirlpool would gladly donate a cornea, milk prize bulls, eat glass, in order to pry US brand names from Haier's grip.
  • Whirlpool is the primary manufacturer of "Kenmore" brand for Sears, while Maytag has significant Home Depot display space.
  • Whirlpool doubled (we're still looking for this statistic) their market share in Australia and New Zealand when acquiring Maytag, and we guess will do more of the same if acquiring Daewoo.  What of Whirlpool's cozy Fisher & Paykel Global Alliance?
And this is just the stuff we know without looking.  Feel free to add to this list.
  • UPDATE:  Apr 28:  Daewoo is the exclusive manufacturer of Maytag top-freezer refrigerators.
  • UPDATE:  May 2:  The Petters Group, the major appliance equivalent of Ron Popeil's Ronco, and which distributes "Sunbeam" brand major appliances made in Costa Rica and "Polaroid" brand TVs (perhaps made in Peru?), is rumored to have made a bid for Daewoo, though we have found no evidence of this.
  • UPDATE:  September 18:  Ripplewood Holdings, the loser in a bid to buy Maytag was the victor in a bid to buy Daewoo in conjunction with
