Viking Sets the Standard
We have come into possession of a Viking sales training document which sets out the Viking procedure for measuring oven capacity. The document created for dealer training explains that Viking ovens are larger than others, but that some competitors use a less rigorous measurement method which results in a larger published capacity figure. The document is quite a read, and we recommend that you all do.
Where is AHAM on the issue of setting standards for CFM, Sones, BTU, Oven Capacity, Energy Usage, etc, etc?.
From the AHAM website: "Standards are adopted voluntarily by AHAM members in the public interest, to establish common understanding between manufacturers and consumers and to assist consumers in comparing appliances before purchases."
How can AHAM allow members to "voluntarily" work in the "public interest"?
Without standards we have chaos, and competition based on deceit, and soon enough someone's sleeping with the fishes. For example the range hood industry.
MESSAGE TO AHAM: GET THE MOVERS AND SHAKERS INTO A ROOM, SET SOME STANDARDS, REMOVE "VOLUNTARILY ADOPTED" FROM THE MEMBERSHIP AGREEMENT.........AND LET'S GET ON WITH OUR LIVES.
UPDATE: Jan 26 2005: Reported by Appliance News: "Jan. 11, 2005. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) announced the publication of its 25th product performance evaluation procedure, AHAM-OV-1-2005 Standard for the Determination and Expression of Oven Volume. The standard establishes a uniform, repeatable method for determining and expressing the overall volume and usable oven space of the cooking cavity of household ovens, AHAM said. The scope of the standard includes residential microwave, electric and gas freestanding ovens, and built-in ovens."
