Sub-Zero Sales Plummet. Threatens to Close Wisconsin Factory.

Sub-Zero, the big Kahuna of high end appliances has confirmed what we all long thought, that all ain't peachy in Wisconsin.  Sub-Zero is considering drastic changes to one of its Wisconsin plants, either:

  • forcing the 200 employees of its Fitchburg Wolf plant to accept a 20% pay cut.
  • closing its Fitchburg Wolf plant and shifting production to Sub-Zero's never used dishwasher plant in Richmond, Kentucky
  • or, believe it or not, both

Sub Zero has also purchased a 440,000 square foot plant in Goodyear, AZ where it will shift production from its Phoenix refrigerator plant which is half the size.  Only the daft can't see that the size of the new plant lends itself to taking over some or all of the fridge production that remains in Madison, WI

Evidently, a falling tide lowers all boats, including the "do no wrong" brands of Wolf and Sub-Zero.  The spectacular growth of SZ was built not on the backs of the rich, but on the backs of the middle class who wanted to feel rich.  Sub Zero and Wolf were icons of wealth which were just about attainable by the middle class, but in this recession, the middle is simply focused on not loosing ground.  They can no longer play out of their league, and there's no one else to pick up the slack.
There are not enough actually rich people to support the investment, KBIS space, sales force, line extensions, corporate dining rooms, downtown refurbishments, Hollywood product placements, dealer factory tours that marked the last two decades of the high end behemoths.

Though this conversation will certainly degrade to the pros and cons of unions, the most important point here is that Sub Zero, almost 2 years since the beginning of the national recession, and 3 years since the appliance recession, has not found a way out of its sales collapse.  No international sales, no sub-tier brands or less featured products.  Nothing creative, nothing offensive, no interesting marketing plans, no must have products or newly minted segments.  The best idea that Sub-Zero can think of is a pay cut of $200,000 per month, for a total savings of $2.4 million per year.

This is a purely defensive play by a company built to serve a market that to a great measure, no longer exists.

Wolf Appliance - Update Sept 12th, 2010 - Offer accepted!

The following article was published on Channel3000.com in Madison, Wisconsin ---http://www.channel3000.com/money/24959088/detail.html--- (updated: 9:33 am CDT September 12, 2010) ---MADISON, Wis. -- Employees at Madison-based Wolf Appliance Inc. voted on Friday to accept a deal to save their jobs that required a 20 percent pay cut and five-year wage freeze. The 110-89 vote by members of the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 565 comes less than a month after the union had voted to reject the contract on Aug. 12 by a 112-93 margin. Wolf officials had announced a plan to move 100 jobs to a plant in Kentucky following the initial vote, and up to 200 jobs eventually. Union representatives said they hoped the new vote will save those positions. Company vice president Chuck Verri said on Friday that the agreement runs through October 2018 and will save the jobs of about 200 workers. Andy

At What Point Do ...

... we begin to look at this problem more deeply ???   Yes, jobs were saved, but with a practical "dead cert" of taxes going up along with the cost of living, did this Union exert it's fiduciary duty to their members by simply rolling over ... or ... did members have no choice ???

Since this agreement undoes what previously bargained contracts attained, even a boycott of Sub & Wolf products would probably bring them back to the table at some point, so the boycott would ultimately hurt the workers ...

It is a conundrum with no real cut-and-dry solution when the company is holding over the heads of workers a move to another region of the country whose arms are wide open ...

Well Bob....

What would you propose the workers do ? My gut tells me Sub Zero spent way too much on the palace they put together and in the end the workers suffer since that is the easy way out for management. Another company that wants to spend heartily and pay back slowly. I guess a $10.00 per hour job is better than nothing. I am sorry to see that but what is the alternative ? The bigger issue is when the managers spend foolishly over the next five years what will the company ask for then ? Obama says we need better education for the workforce but Barrack , where are those jobs ? Maybe he should have worried about that the day he took office instead of spending like he did and he should have pushed a jobs program as hard as he did the health care program.

Terrific

Congratulations to all.

sub zero woes

I was a subzero dealer for over 20 years. 2005 and 2006 produced close to 5 million in business. I retired for a couple years and have restarted my business. When I approached the SZ distrib. i was refused the franchise because they had went with another store. Sounds like they could use some help. Maybe the mayor of    fitchburg could put in a good word for me.

Ah, yes ...

... how short memories become !!!

Maybe if they don't "need" you, then neither do you "need" them, but I'll bet if you begin to produce with another manufacturer they'll suddenly "need" you once again !!!

Conspicuous consumption

The current recession has impacted both rich and poor (though not equally) and has caused each of us to consider less expensive, practical substitutes for "top of the line" products. While competitive substitutes may not offer dual compressors or "two week lettuce" it doesn't take too many consumers "stepping down" to impact high-end suppliers.

Is this the end of conspicuous consumption?  I think yes, at least for the foreseeable future. High-end manufacturers will have to face the dreaded music of "entry level products" if they want to keep factories open. Companies that believe their target consumers won't even consider brands that are purchased by the "riff-raff" will go the way of the dinosaur.

Cohiba

Many times we both sat with our leaders at our respective companies as we wondered how long the good run would last. The housing boom brought more consumers into play at the high end than should have been there. Wolf , Dacor , Viking and others grew their infrastrucure and thought there was no end. Unfortunately here it is. Many good people will lose their jobs and if I was the mayor of Fitchberg I would aggressively see what we could do to keep Wolf right where it is at. Yes that means those midwest unions who still live in the 1970's will have to come full circle and look to have a positive impact on keeping Wolf right there. Moving to Arizona though would be their best move from cost to taxes to their choice of solid workers.Skilled and with a good solid work ethic.I am so sorry to see that state where I grew up lose more jobs.

"Social Outcasts" and people ...

... apologizing for any act which does not look like "belt tightening" is beginning to be more and more observed !!!

I believe that, especially after this past week on Wall Street, it is obvious that all the baloney the current Administration has tried to sling past the American people has worn thinner and thinner !!!   Unemployment has only varied by tenths of a point ... benefits have had to extended ... and ... there are still an increasing number of bankruptcies, foreclosures, and defaults ...

On a more positive note ... it was one year ago this day that I woke up from transplant surgery to say "I guess I made it !!!"  ... I just wonder what it was I was saved from a pine box for !?!?!?

On the subject of Baloney

We are here at this sorry point in history because the American people asked for, make that demanded, that they be promised baloney, told baloney, and sold baloney.  They have all happily taken heaping helpings of baloney, while all the time thinking its Prime Rib.

So let's cut the baloney:  You can't cut taxes and raise revenue, at least not in the tax environment we have ever lived in.  You can't run a war without raising taxes to pay for it.  You can't have free trade if your side is the only side free.  You can't be independent if you depend on foreign countries to float your debt, or foreign counties to supply your energy.  You can't expect to live in a safe and secure world without regulation.  You can't build the largest military in the world, and not expect that someone will think of using it once too often.  You can't lead if you don't invest in your own infrastructure, whether its roads and bridges, or schools and health care.  (Feel free to add your own.)

The administration was handed the no win scenario of economic collapse, catastophic debt, 2 wars and a Senate filled with ninnies.  So he made mistakes?  Yes he made mistakes.  If dogs aren't eating corpses in the streets, he far surpassed expectations for 2010.

Side Note:  We here at ApplianceAdvisor.com are all happy that you missed your exit 1 year ago and continue expressing your appliance and worldy wisdom to our readers.  The pine box industry (still American I believe) will not be denied, but they can certainly be delayed.

Slicing the Bologna ...

You make some compelling points which pose the obvious question of ...
Have we always made the correct decisions having to do with the aspects of American life you enumerate ???
I think not ...

I think that America has gotten very comfortable with all their expectations of entitlements and conveniently turn their head when the price tag is waived in front of them ...

None of us like to pay taxes, nor want to see them raised to pay for something we, individually or collectively, disagree on ... in my way of thinking, the only option left is to control those in Washington - who can/will not do so themselves - and install a flat tax which will handcuff Washington because under such a programme, the only way to increase revenue is to stimulate the economy and raise income !!!   I know is sounds pie-in-the-sky, but I just have not yet heard of another better idea !!!

On a Personal Note ... Thank you, Advisor, for the kind words !!!  I guess you're stuck with me, eh ???

All Ears.

I am all ears to hear what you think an entitlement is. Don't you dare include anything we have paid a tax for expecting a retirement check. If you do you need to build a raft and float back to the mother country. But I am all yours  to hear your argument on a real entitlement and what your definition is.

Governmental Entitlements ...

... are commonly defined as " ... an individual's presumed right to receive a value or benefit by law from government ... "

You can Google "Governmental Entitlement Programs" for the entire list, and if you cannot find something which you disagree with, then I don't think you're looking too hard !!!

Let Me Tell You

Let me tell you Hitchcock that as long as we are pouring money overseas in the billions of dollars as we  are , as long as we subsidize big business as we are, don't come back and tell me we should not help those in need in this country. I for one would gladly help a family in need and not give a break to Warren Buffet. This is ridiculous to continue to batter the American public that apparently saved your country from Germany. God save the Queen. In your case our brave soldiers whose benefits are listed as an entitlement did. This is what pisses me off about people who banter on about entitlements. Should we just let people die in the streets ? Think all those in need are lazy ? En Guarde'

For the Record ...

... Warren Buffett believes he does not pay enough taxes !!!

As I said, if you cannot find an Entitlement you dislike, you are not looking very hard !!!    We're not talking about common sense, just common cents !!!

Bag of Wind.

Buffet is a self serving big bag of wind. Here is why. He could pay whatever tax he wanted just take the standard deduction. Plus , it is easy for him to say that since he has half the money already. If you ever met him he is a big bag of arrogant wind. Don't buy his marketing spcheel.

Isn't that ...

... calling the kettle black ???   Why would anyone pay more tax than they absolutely have to ???   You do not make sense ...

Putting your money where your mouth is........

that an old saying that everybody is aware of. People like Buffert who goes around saying they don't pay enough taxes should either do so on thier own or SHUT UP!!!!!! They should speak for anybody else!!!!

Huh ???

Why would anyone do so without being required so to do ???

I'd rather he continue with his charitable giving as opposed to giving it away to the US Treasury ... the $$$ gets to where it belongs, not as your tax dollars usually do !!!

Taxes

That's a bit foolish.  If your representatives see fit to have government do stuff, they should also see fit to raise taxes to pay for it.  We are doing too much.  We are taxing too little.  Yet until I'm required to pay more, I won't, and this is not hypocritical.

Your right but....

it is the same hipocrisy that Al Gore is doing, telling you one but not backing it up!!! And yes I would rather have him use his money for charitable giving but he should lobby for a tax increase that other people, in his or other tax brackets don't want.

What ?

You quoted Buffet as saying he did not pay enough taxes ? He can pay what he would like. Makes all the sense to me based on your quote. But again , like most republicans he may be talking from both sides of his mouth. Blah , blah , blah.

I said ...

"... Warren Buffett believes he does not pay enough taxes !!!"     That is completely different from what you insinuate ...

Learn the Language

An apple is an apple even if it believes it is an orange.Buffet is a big bag of hot wind and can pony up more money for taxes. You sound like Glenn Beck. Are you as dramatic as he is ?

I am ...

... not a fan and worry about people who find him their ideologue ...

Hannity

You must be a Hannity talking puppet then.

To clarify ...

... I worry about anyone who uses a TV personality as an ideologue !!!

Bottoms Up

You either drink too much or not enough.

Subject speak

I was looking at the subject titles for this past string of postings and thought it was kind of funny the way they  string together.  They read ....

"Let me tell you for the record, Bag of Wind. Isn't that what I said? Learn the language! I am Hannity !"

Keep it up you guys. This is fun.

Locker Room

On my college football team we had rookies like Bob who we could always have go and guard the stadium from elephants. Locker room comedy , especially for sophomores at that time.

Always ...

... glad to entertain, even if it is unintentional !!!

Arghhhh !!!

Just don't ever include social security in your banter . You Tea Party natural you.

Why, the Need to Label ???

Why are you so predisposed to putting a label on people, myself included ???

I am not registered to a party ... I believe that both Parties ought to be wary of the Tea Party people ... if I were to be for "something" fervently, it would be RESPONSIBILITY !!!

Labels , Labels and More Labels.

I guess then you have never labeled anyone ??? I gotcha there Bob. You are too worked up.

No ...

... not really !!!

Baloney

All beef or loaded with turkey and chicken parts ? As you say , there are no free lunches and never were any. People have forgotten that Bush policies probably put us where we are today. The rich have gotten richer. We eat all beef baloney.

Economy

I think that the problems created by the economic downturn are frankly too big for anyone to have a good answer or strategy for. I think no stimulus would have put us in a depression for sure.We have a long way to go and no one will have a simple answer for quite some time. As Europe falters even more will spell more trouble for all of us.I step back though and consider our lives to be much more blessed than those in Darfur or other areas where kids have no rooms , clothes or food. Count the blessings we have .

Economy

I went to Disney World Last week and left more food on my dinner plates than most people even get to eat in a week. Disney is the epitome of what America is becoming. $3 bottles of water, $4 Ice Cream, $30 dinners everyday, $17 battery operated fan (you can buy for $7 at Wmart), $30 photos, $200 a night rooms, $100 day park pass, $14 parking, etc.I saw more foreigners there than Americans, and I don't mean park workers. However, I enjoyed every minute of it.

Disney World was ...

... originally conceived as a place where everyone could come to enjoy a fun and educational experience at a reasonable price ...

Unfortunately, Disney has been taken is the wrong direction because people were willing to save all year long to blow it @ Disney in a week ...

It soon became the true epitomy of the idea " ... if you build it, they will come ..."
