RANGEHOOD INDUSTRY: Time to Pump the Cesspool part deux Exclusive

The Home Ventilating Institute (HVI), effective October 2, 2006, has agreed to procedures for the verification of performance claims (CFM, Noise) made in advertising and marketing by rangehood manufacturers which are not members of HVI.
If you think this sounds boring, it is only because you have no idea how many folks just soiled their shorts reading this.

It is widely believed in the industry and by ApplianceAdvisor.com that the rangehood industry is a corrupt playing field, in which uncertified suppliers are believed to be promising more, supplying less, cheating consumers, and stealing market share through unethical practice.  If the verification tests result in significant differences between the performance promised on the brochures and the performance found in the lab, then;

"The HVI board shall act to protect the safety and interests of the general public, designers, builders, consumers, code officials, HVI members and HVI non-member manufacturers.  These actions may include, but are not limited to, Notification of Industry Press through Press Releases, Notification of the Federal Trade Commission about fraudulent claims, Notification of Government Certification agencies and any other information dissemination that the HVI Board of Directors deems necessary and appropriate."

Any frequent visitor to ApplianceAdvisor.com, knows that we have been lobbying and working with HVI, and the HVI membership for years in pursuit of just this kind of program.  Though Americans can now be wire tapped, arrested, secretly bundled off out of the country, imprisoned and tortured (short of organ failure) without benefit of the slightest judicial oversight or review, we can be proud of the fact that we soon will benefit from a rigorous industry driven program to oversee and review the performance of our kitchen rangehoods.  Is this a great country or what?

UPDATE:  October 6:  Note of support:
I commend you for your aggressive support of HVI and working toward a standard of performance testing industry wide.
I have never seen another segment of this industry which offers more unsupported performance claims than the ventilation segment. I feel you are doing the entire appliance industry and general consumer a major service, and we sincerely hope that all manufacturers join HVI to level the playing field for the benefit of all.
