LAYOFFS: F&P Ends Product Development in US
Fisher & Paykel announced to their employees September 23, that all US-based Product Development functions, except Industrial Design, will end by Q1, 2009. USA product development for F&P and DCS will shift to New Zealand.
We reached F&P USA president Michael Goadby for comment. Mr. Goadby, referring to F&P engineering centers in Italy, Huntington Beach and New Zealand lamented that in the current economic climate F&P "just cannot any longer sustain three (engineering) operations......and we were the smallest". He further said that many of the 30 effected engineers were offered positions in Mexico or in New Zealand.
For now F&P will remain in its "5900" building, but the "5800" building, vacant since production has moved to Mexico, will be sublet.
UPDATE Oct 14
See additional detail on layoffs at F&P published October 13 in the Orange County Register.
It cannot be determined from the story if the 110 layoffs referenced are all hourly, or if salary is also mixed in there.

Cheaper in Mexico ? Another organization taking advantage of a low labor area. I hope they pay a stiff tax for moving all of those jobs. The DCS brand name will not be the same .I wonder if all of the skilled engineers responsible for the great products will move to Mexico.

Hmmmmm.... So much for businesses investing in American labor. Let us review. A capital investment firm purchases DCS,a firm full of Wall Street Sharks. They run it aground, sell it off , make money on the cycle of money and the California economy loses well over 600 jobs.Great job. Don't you love greed ? Goadby says the smallest ? I think they got rid of the best. God forbid we could have American jobs. When China invades them . Who ya gonna call ????
