Holy Flaming Dishwashers.... Batman

2.3 million Maytag and Jennair dishwashers built between 1997 and 2001 are being recalled because of 135 dishwasher fires resulting in 4 injuries including 3 reports of smoke inhalation and 1 "serious hand laceration when operating a fire extinguisher to put out a fire".
And the cause?  The leakage of "Rinse Aid" onto electronic components.

Just to put 2.3 million into perspective, it would require more than 5,000 tractor trailers to carry these dishwashers.  Unlike automotive recalls, these are built-in, immobile appliances requiring 2.3 million house calls.

We have quite a bit of sympathy for Whirlpool on this one.  Couldn't this have been solved with a Service Bulletin or a note to owners to stop using the Rinse Aid?  This is a longgggggg time after the warranty.
UPDATE:  February 2:  More traffic than expected.  We have been told that this would require 11,500 tractor trailers with 200 units in each...stretching 115 miles bumper to bumper.
