Bake and Broiler Sparking and Failure?

We are investigating a report of 30" ranges with defective Bake and Broil elements. The elements give off a July 4th spark display and then fail at a rate of 2% - 10%, scaring the living bejezus out of, though not injuring, the household's primary food preparer. The elements are reported to be found in Maytag and Whirlpool products, possible GE as well.
Is there any confirmation out there of this issue?
